PETE THOUGHT MAYBE A FEW WORDS REGARDING THIS YEAR'S DO WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA SO HERE ARE A FEW COMMENTS

THE HARDY FEW VENTURED NORTH LAST WEEK TO WEAVERTHORPE IN YORKSHIRE TO THE BLUE BELL IN FOR A FEW BEERS AND A BIT TO EAT BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PLAY AT GANTON THE NEXT MORNING.

ON THE WAY UP THE A1 THERE WERE CALLS REDUCING OUR NUMBERS FROM 16 DOWN TO 10 POSSIBLY 9 (THE LOWEST EVER ATTENDANCE I THINK) BUT IN TRUE DME SPIRIT THIS LITTLE BAND MANAGED TO HAVE A TRULY WONDERFUL TIME AND THAT GOES DOWN TO A GREAT EXTENT TO THE PUB MANAGER JARROD WHO LOOKED AFTER US TO THE EXTENT OF EVEN JOINING IN SCRUM PRACTICE IN THE BAR AT 3:00 IN THE MORNING.

GANTON WAS A GREAT TEST AND DEFEATED ALL OF US BUT WE STILL AS ALWAYS ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE

FOR DINNER OUR SMALL NUMBERS ACTUALLY WORKED IN OUR FAVOUR AS JARROD WAS ABLE TO GIVE US OUR OWN PRIVATE ROOM AND SERVED UP AND MASSIVE PIECE OF RIB OF BEEF AND YORKSHIRE ACCOMPANIED BY 4 BOTTLE BOTTLES OF RIJOCA THAT JUST SEEMED TO KEEP COMING.

WE ALL MUST APOLOGISE TO TAFFY FOR BEING FINED BY THE MASTER FINE MAN PHILIP FOR BEING WELSH. HE NEARLY GOT ANOTHER FINE FOR PAYING UP.

SPECIAL MENTION MUST BE MADE FOR STEVE WHO DUE TO ILLNESS MISSED HIS FIRST EVER DME AND TO CHAS WHO WENT BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY. HE HAD LUNCH IN LONDON ON THE THURSDAY,TOOK THE TRAIN AND A TAXI TO WEAVERTHORPE IN THE EVENING AND CARRIED ON WITH THE REST OF US UNTIL 3:00 IN THE MORNING. GOLF ALL DAY ON THE FRIDAY THE DINNER AUCTION AND SCRUM PRACTICE AGAIN UNTIL 3:00 THEN UP, TAXI TO YORK,TRAIN TO LONDON ,ACROSS LONDON TO WATERLOO EUROSTAR TO PARIS PARTY TIME FOLLOWED BY MORE PARTY TIME AND GOT TO BED AT 06:30 SUNDAY MORNING.

IF EVER ANYONE IS IN YORKSHIRE WE ALL CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BLUE BELL IN AND IT WAS GENERALLY AGREED THAT IF THE DME COULD TRANSPORT THE PUB EVERY YEAR WE WOULD ALWAYS HAVE A GREAT TIME. THEY EVEN PUT UP AN AUCTION PRIZE WITHOUT EVEN ASKING.

NOT SURE WHERE WE WILL BE GOING NEXT YEAR BUT KEEP AN EYE ON HERE AND WILL LET YOU KNOW.

THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED AND HOPE TO SEE YOU AND MANY MORE SOMEWHERE NEXT YEAR.

Pete Nokes gives a flavour:

Difficult to select champagne moments from such a thoroughly enjoyable 36 hour total experience but right up there has to be; - The Pro’s delectable wife and rather tasty friend, all smiles and bonhomie on the first tee asking us all to turn our backs for their opening shots - Tom’s face 5 minutes later on contact with the opening shot - exploding powder ball - Neil Cook quietly and smilingly commenting during Friday night in the depths of Jacks nightclub" I haven't done this for 42.8 years or so" - Marty eloquently threatening to sue Jacks and one particular bruiser for manslaughter as I lay ham-acting prostrate by the doors through which I was shoved, whilst Stevie couldn’t stop giggling at the 'demise' of his mate - The post golf, sunset, leather arm chaired, real ale supping and cigar smoking DME circle - Adrian and Bill unable to keep up with the crackerjack auction and their realisation that they had just bid against each other and then even against their own individual bids! - Greg's tick tock reminder, cutting the Chair off at his most verbose prime many more but a lots is a pleasant haze

14 attended. 3 first timer friends of Tom’s, Simon Hill; Simeon Thrower and Hakan Erixon. The first two played rugby with or at one remove from DME themselves. Neil Cook, a friend of Adrian Delaney’s and Bill Kelsey Fry’s made the fourth very welcome first timer. Hopefully they will become regulars as DME themselves would have been proud of them all whether at the bar or on the course, or in Simon’s case on the dance floor encouraging (successfully) the Welsh maidens to bar dive into the arms of those old enough to be their fathers and grandfathers.

Chas Bradshaw Smith alone represented the original DME’s from outside London, doing outstandingly well at the bar-diving, with Pete Nokes and Steve Hyde supporting him bravely. Duncan McInnes, Greg Tyrzinski, Nick Lypscynski, Martin Brown and Tom Baigrie represented the Tafia.

Martin Brown took on the responsibilities with a 34, though the card was signed off as a 31 as he desperately tried to REDUCE his total when he realized what he had done. 31 was still enough on a very tough links course, marred in the morning by several temporary greens. (If any player would like the green fee element of his £199 sub refunded please e-mail me and I’ll sort it). Simon Hill was the only obvious avoider fined. 29 Stapleford off 14 and yes 29 off 18 too! Sensible stuff on your first time out. Stevie Hyde won the wooden spoon with a heroic 14.

The afternoon saw a 12 hole ‘Norwegian Scramble’ (like a Texan, but the ball chosen cannot play the next shot) which saw Martin, Chas, Simeon and Steve runaway winners at 29 Stapleford. This time the course was fully playable and the greens though dressed, pretty and true.

The Sweepstake was won by Neil Cook who very kindly donated it as did Bill K-F who came second. Well done gents.

The auction was aggressively and fractiously conducted by the writer, ably contradicted by Chas and Adrian and with elegant but brief assistance from Stevie.

Those who donate the prizes are the most important charitable elements, so a big thank you, in proportion to your costs to those listed below. John Boissier and Phil Horsnall esp. derserve recognition. Keep getting wealthier gentlemen! The buyers too need recognition, particularly Adrian and Bill, for bravely putting victory in a good cause ahead of value for money! But attendance is the key dear reader, so do turn up next year!

Martin will allocate the proceeds below, after Gift Aid, to a smaller registered charity to be announced. Last year’s monies are on their way to schooling Autistic Children, once the Government have coughed up their bit. My thanks to Nick Lip for organizing this and to Peter Nokes for handling all the banking this year again.

Charity (Distibution of money raised in 2001)

A) £3,750.00 to Plymouth and District Leukaemia fund:

The Plymouth and District Leukaemia Fund is a registered charity (No. 290480) set up in 1983 with the aim of raising money to improve the quality of care available to people with leukaemia and other blood disorders, and to enable them to have comprehensive care locally. Initially it raised money for a purpose built Haematology Unit, Birch ward which was opened at Derriford Hospital in 1988. There were four laminar flow rooms so that patients needing bone marrow transplantation no longer needed to travel to London. There are now 6 isolation rooms on the ward. The fund has also set up a bone marrow processing laboratory for the stem cell transplants, and a molecular biology laboratory in Derriford Hospital. It has funded research into the effects of growth factors in leukaemic cells and many papers have been published in the scientific literature. It has supported 2 PhD students who have recently successfully graduated. We have regularly purchased equipment for the ward (infusion pumps, etc.) and we are now just about to build a conservatory type of extension to the day case area. Many patients come up for the day (transfusions, chemotherapy and tests) and can return home in the evening but so many patients were attending, conditions were cramped and unsafe. Now they will be able to spent the day in much more pleasant surroundings.

The chair of the trustees for this charity and my brother Tim, who is a local consultant haematologist, I am delighted to say should be joining us in St Mellion to offer their thanks, wisdom and dosh for the next DME Funds deserving recipients
