The inspiration for the DME came when Mark Downey and a group of friends who had recently qualified from Bedford College, London University (now fiendishly swallowed up by Royal Holloway College ) decided that they would like to commemorate the lives of three of their fellow students who had died while just at the very start of their adult life.

The name 'DME' derives from the first letter of the surname of these three friends:


D undas ...Dave
M cBride ...Jim
E vans ...Peter

The DME has a unique method of running itself which over the years has led to it having a life of its own. This means that while the three friends whose lives were originally celebrated are still honoured and remembered every year, the competition is no longer specifically linked to alumni of Bedford College and all-comers who have the right mix of fun, high spirits and charity are welcome.
