The deal is this:
The DME is played once a year.
Winning the DME is a great honour (there is a handsome trophy) and comes with some privileges and some duties.
The fun bit:
You get to choose the next venue
You get to choose the charity to which the money raised during your year of victory is allocated
The duty bit:
You get to organise next year's competition. This is not as bad as it is made out ...still less so since the advent of emails. Gone are the days of DMEers desperately trying to come second ...this is now usually caused by people not being good enough to come first
Traditionally the DME is played on a Friday in the autumn.
The day's golf consists of an 18 hole individual Stableford competition from which the honours are derived. Usually there is a light lunch followed by a light-hearted foursome or four ball competition ...but this is frequently dispensed with by the flakier members of the party.
In the evening there is a grand dinner which is accompanied by a Charity Auction in which people auction off items in their gift (such as rugby & cricket tickets, stays in villas, garish ties & so forth) for the raising of money for the charity.
